There is a clear lesson here for everyone: you will pay the price for stealing from humanity at the expense of societal progress, writes JD Lovrenciear.
With the arrest of former Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, an exodus of Umno chieftains has already begun.
The last minute (perhaps too late) exit of staunch Najib supporters from Umno has put the party in a critical state of mass haemorrhage.
Component party leaders like the renegade myPPP clique or race-based political parties like the withering MCA and cracking MIC will probably want to disappear from the radar of public opinion too.
But all this is a little too late. Accountability for their sins of omission will catch up with them once punishment is meted out for the sins of commission.
There is a bitter lesson here for everyone in or outside Malaysia: there is a price to be paid for corruption, whether it is by wilful indulgence or even by being a mere parasitic beneficiary. You will pay the price for stealing from humanity at the expense of societal progress. Even the Great Train Robber could not escape the long arm of the law despite all the years of staying below the radar of public scrutiny.
Thanks to the new government, the rule of law is very much alive and kicking in the new Malaysia.
The drama is just unfolding. And let politicians in and outside Pakatan Harapan be reminded again and again that there is no place under the sun for greed, deception and betrayal of humanity.
