Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination, almost certainly carried out by Israel, suggests that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is not interested in negotiating a truce.

Since the beginning of Israel’s onslaught in Gaza, many have speculated that Netanyahu would prolong the war to save and prolong his political career and avoid going to jail on corruption charges.

This narrative gives him too much credit. It is not just that. Netanyahu’s actions are likely to result in Israeli captives held by Hamas being killed by Israel’s bombs and artillery shells falling on Gaza.

If the hostages perish, it would mean Hamas would be devoid of any bargaining power to negotiate for peace. It would also give Netanyahu a free rein in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

Hamas would find it difficult to ensure that the Israeli captives are safe and kept alive.

But Netanyahu appears to have little interest in the wellbeing of the Israelis other than his own.

The international community, especially the US, must wake up to this reality. The Israeli leader has been a liability for the US for far too long. It is time for the US to say enough is enough and stop sending him any more money and weapons.

This is the only way to stop the most heinous slaughter of our fellow human beings in living memory and to ensure peace in the Middle East.

The solution to peace in the Middle East is clear. Provide justice for the Palestinians by giving them back their land and their freedom under the UN resolution for a two-state solution.

The occupation and colonisation of Palestine by Israel and the oppression and genocide of the Palestinians have to stop.
