The government has recently promised to abolish the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA).
However repeal is only the first step, with a new higher education framework now expected to take its place.
So will abolishing the UUCA truly make Malaysian public universities freer, or could the same culture of control simply survive under a new law?
Astro Awani’s Melisa Idris talks to Aliran executive member Zaharom Nain, an adjunct professor at Taylor’s University, who was on the 2018-19 technical committee to study the repeal of the UUCA. He is joined by Alyaah Hani, the president of Liga Mahasiswa Malaysia.
