In 2018 a 300-foot superyacht became one of the most talked-about symbols of the 1MDB scandal.
Behind its recovery was a legal team fighting to bring back what belonged to Malaysia, and one of the people at the heart of it explains what it took.
Sitpah Selvaratnam is an independent arbitrator who worked pro bono on the arrest of the Equanimity. She has since told the story in her book The Arrest of the Superyacht Equanimity: How Malaysia Reclaimed What Was Hers.
But this isn’t only a story about law, money or a billion-dollar scandal. It is about what happens inside a person when they take on something this big. Sitpah got there after 20 years of standing her ground, and she brought together self-belief and the discipline of aikido along the way. The work also changed her, and she calls it a spiritual journey.
We talk about how it all happened, what it taught her and what it takes to stay steady when everything around you is moving.
