Core public services, including healthcare and education, will not be affected by the proposed review of government operating expenditure.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said essential medical services, including the recruitment of new doctors and nurses as well as the construction of clinics, will continue.
Anwar said that although the Ministry of Education’s spending has been reduced, the construction of new classrooms for the current intake of students has not been affected.
Anwar said, instead, savings are focused on cutting spending considered excessive, including overseas courses, ceremonies at luxury hotels and development projects that go beyond actual needs.
He said courses that can be conducted locally will be held in the country, while official ceremonies are now encouraged to be held at ministry premises to reduce costs.
On 29 April, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said the Ministry of Finance has directed all ministries to review their operating expenditure.
