Photography and ‘Chineseness’ in Southeast Asia

Presenter: Zhuang Wubin, writer, curator and photographer

Discussant: Dr Fiona Lee, literary and cultural studies scholar

Produced by Pusat Sejarah Rakyat

Since 2005 Zhuang Wubin has been using photography, oral history and archival work to unpack the experiences of ‘Chinese-ness’ in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.

In this session, Zhuang begins with his two projects – Chinese Muslims in Indonesia (2007-09) and Chinese in the Small Towns and Rural Areas of Southeast Asia (2010-ongoing). He uses the created images to unpack and intersect ‘Chinese-ness’ with religion, place and class. He also attempts to connect the photo projects with his interest as a writer researching about the praxis of photography across the region.
