Penang’s mega-reclamation project: Fishermen speak out

Zakaria Ismail is the head of the Sungai Batu Fishermen's Unit - ANIL NETTO/ALIRAN

Penang Tolak Tambak speaks to fishermen and activists campaigning against a massive land reclamation project to create three artificial islands off the southern coast of Penang Island. They claim the reclamation will muddy precious fishing waters that will hurt their livelihoods and undermine food security in Penang.

I admit I did not listen to the whole conversation before writing this comment.
I believe the Penang Fishermen’s Association and Penang Tolak Jambak have solid grounds to object to the mega-reclamation project.
I pride to think of myself as a conservationist at heart, yet I cannot say with full conviction that the mega-reclamation project doesnot have any redeeming values.
I have followed the project since it was officially revealed-is it not supposed to fund the Penang Master Transport Plan?
Yes,it shall be that the fishermen directly affected will have to sacrifice for other Penangites
I do not wish to appear callous but some will have to pay for development.
But,isn’t the project still-born at the moment? The federal govt.wont approve it!
