In this opinion video, Joe Gill, journalist and editor at Middle East Eye, says it is increasingly difficult to be shocked after 18 months of Israel’s genocidal onslaught on Gaza.
Brazen crimes against humanity, he argues, have become the norm. World powers remain silent or issue weak statements, while the US has fully aligned itself with Israel’s campaign of starvation and forced displacement against two million Palestinians.
Gill contends that Israel and the US are actively pursuing the violent ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with no meaningful pushback from international institutions. He points to the inaction of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court despite previous findings on the risk of genocide and war crimes.
Gill also highlights the targeted killings of humanitarian workers, including aid staff, civil defence teams and UN employees. A civil defence spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, described the recent attack as “one of the most brutal massacres Gaza has witnessed in modern history”.
Yet even after the deaths of foreign nationals and UN personnel, Western governments refuse to hold Israel accountable, and official statements often fail to name the perpetrator.
Gill concludes that the global order is shifting from any pretence of legal norms to open rule by force, led by Israel and its allies. He calls this the lawless new world order of 2025.
