The New Start treaty between the US and Russia expired in February 2026, marking the end of the last major nuclear arms control agreement.
Alarm bells went off with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres noting that “for the first time in more than half a century, we face a world without any binding limits on the strategic nuclear arsenals”.
