The Higher Education Ministry has drafted new guidelines under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 to regulate students who are involved in politics on and off campus.
BFM looks at what this means and whether it gives universities too much power over students and their right to be politically active. Then, with a lower minimum voting age at play now, what does this say about our willingness to have younger voices in politics?
To explore the implications, BFM speaks to International Islamic University Malaysia’s Student Union vice-president Rafiq Shahmie and Undi18 co-founder Tharma Pillai.
