A group of 1,476 people have been returned to Myanmar from Malaysia earlier this week, as part of a wider repatriation programme that could eventually involve up to 5,000 people.
The government says the returns are voluntary, however the UN refugee agency has questioned whether people held in immigration detention can make a genuinely free and informed decision to return to a country still under ongoing conflict.
Astro Awani’s Melisa Idris talks to with Sharifah Shakirah, the founder and director of the Rohingya Women Development Network, and Dr Moe Thuzar, a senior fellow and co-ordinator of the the Myanmar studies programme at Iseas-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore.
