A recent undercover investigation by The Fourth found that influencer agencies were willing to discuss campaigns involving racist and divisive narratives, exposing what it describes as a growing ‘hate economy’, where anger and polarisation can be monetised.
But can the same tools of social media influence be used to help make Malaysia harder to divide? Astro Awani’s Melisa Idris talks to journalist Ian Yee, the co-founder of The Fourth, and two content creators who are Fourth Influencers, who go by the monikers Pudds and Fiona Yoong.
