Since 2025, four state governments and their state assemblies have rejected the need to have a public inquiry before degazetting forest reserves and simultaneous providing for the replacement of reserves.
By 27 August, about two-thirds of reserves in the peninsula have been shut out of such public participation.
The lack of media reports on these events is disappointing. Even many environmental NGOs appear to be in the dark.
Journalists should have been reporting these issues. Having a public inquiry before any degazetting could easily cut away the ‘official secrets’ tape that binds so much of our environmental reporting and financial investigations.
But no, we didn’t pay attention to these manoeuvres by the states , and we haven’t seen many media reports on this issue either.
