Malaysia has been a party to Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (Cedaw) since 1995. But more than three decades on, translating that commitment into law and practice remains an ongoing challenge.
With the latest Cedaw follow-up now underway, what does and what should progress on women’s rights actually look like?
Astro Awani’s Melisa Idris talks to Dr Hiroko Akizuki, a member of the UN Committee on Cedaw, and Melissa Akhir, a Suhakam commissioner and women and child rights advocate.
The ‘Legislating Equality: CEDAW & Beyond — a Symposium on Legislative Reform for Women’s Human Rights’ was organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia on Gender Equality, Malaysia, Suhakam and the Bar Council’s women’s rights committee, supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as Australian Aid.
