In a social media post on Thursday, independent Senator Bernie Sanders held a conversation with Quincy Institute Founder Trita Parsi, The Iran Podcast host Negar Mortazavi and Center for International Policy researcher Sina Toossi.
They analysed the current conflict, emphasising the need for a broader understanding of the geopolitical stakes and the history of US-Iran relations since 1953, when a CIA-backed coup overthrew Iran’s democratic leader Mohammad Mosaddegh.
The panel highlighted the devastating impact of the war on Iranian civilians and infrastructure, specifically citing the bombing of an elementary school as a potential war crime.
Finally, they argued that this unilateral military approach is strengthening hardline factions within Iran and setting back the long-term struggle for democracy and human rights in the region
