Benedict Lopez writes about one person’s attempt to use his talent to raise funds for those with intellectual disabilities.

Former Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) deputy director general Yeow Teck Chai will be holding a solo art exhibition at the Annexe Linkway, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur on 14-18 March 2018.

Themed “Paintings from the Heart”, the exhibition will highlight the artist’s childhood memories and travels.

The paintings on display range from Yeow’s impressions as a youth to the depictions of his extensive travels all over the world.

Proceeds from the sale of these paintings will be donated to the Society for the Severely Mentally Handicapped and the Malaysian SLE Association.

Yeow was a colleague of mine at Mida, and we were both contributors for the organisation’s newsletter MIDAS Touch in the 1990s. His skills are not only confined to painting but also drawing cartoons. Yeow’s contributions to our newsletter was his famous “Durian Talk”, depicting in humorous ways the happenings in Mida.

A graduate from the University of Malaya, Yeow had a distinguished career in Mida spanning 32 years (1974-2006). Upon retirement, Yeow imparted his wealth of experience to the corporate sector advising companies on various matters pertaining to investments.

Yeow attributes his artistic abilities as a gift from the Almighty. “I believe that my ability to paint is a gift from God”, he remarked.
