Stop the disgusting abuse of religion

Many do not realise the heavy price the country will have to pay in the long term if such abuse goes on

Malaysian politicians boldly continue to abuse religion with every passing general election or by-election.

Even when our rulers, who are considered to be the custodians of Islam in this country, have advised politicians not to use religion to advance their political careers, we still hear of such instances.

It is disturbing that some even threaten voters by saying that their ‘passport to heaven’ depends on their choice of political candidate or label candidates from other parties as ‘haram’ (forbidden). This not only desecrates the religion but is dangerous in the long haul.

Despite the outcry of moderate Muslims, such disgusting practices continue to happen.

Those who resort to such despicable abuse of religion for political mileage cannot be ignored. They are fast becoming a dangerous trend during election campaigns.

Whichever the religion, no politician should have a licence to abuse it by preaching a deviant and mutilated interpretation for their own gain.

Responsible sections of the media have reported these instances of abuse. The rulers have warned. The police have warned. Moderate believers have expressed concern.

Yet, the abuse of religion continues, unpunished in Malaysia. Many do not realise the heavy price the country will have to pay in the long term if such abuse goes on.

It’s time to act decisively against those who abuse religion for ulterior political gain.
