Planting of explosive device under Siti Kasim’s car must be condemned vociferously

Let not such heinous criminal extremism become a common trend in our beloved land

Siti Kasim - BERITA DAILY

The news of an improvised explosive device (IED) found attached to the rear suspension of lawyer, activist and vocal critic Siti Kasim has gripped the attention of law-abiding folk.

Yes, all of us who champion democracy, moderate civil rights and liberties, and abhor racism, religious bigotry and extremism are united in demanding that this should never recur in peaceful Malaysia.

This incident must be investigated thoroughly to ensure it is the first and last such abominable threat to ordinary people or their leaders.

Siti is known for her fearless criticisms against racist and religious extremists and hypocrisy.

She is not a business tycoon for us to believe it could be a case of rivalry.

She is not a prominent politician for us to think that opponents may want to finish off her political career.

What if she had not sent her vehicle for servicing before leaving the capital city for a legal assignment on the east coast?

Social media is choked with shock and anger over this incident. Such an incident would only be common in nations where law and order has given way to political, religious and business elements out to silence the champions of moderation, rights, liberties and justice.

Let not such heinous criminal extremism become a common trend in our beloved land as we journey towards building a model nation.

Hopefully, voices from religious quarters, the political arena and the professional fraternities will ring out loud, along with the voices of law-abiding ordinary folk to ensure that this shocking incident will not be repeated.

We must have zero tolerance for such cowardly acts.

The police should be capable of nailing those behind this crime. We must ensure those responsible face justice.

Otherwise, tomorrow it could be judges, politicians, other civil society activists or even religious leaders who might be targeted to put fear in the hearts of the people.

Everyone must step forward to condemn this bomb attempt.

Our national reputation – a moderate, tolerant, peaceful country – would be under attack if this case is not dealt with speedily and severely.

It is not just about Siti Kasim. It is about all of us good people too.
