Ismail Sabri puts Umno back in power

Over 300,000 people have signed an online petition rejecting the choice of Ismail Sabri as the next prime minister.

New reports have labelled Ismail Sabri as a frontrunner in the race to become the country’s next PM after Mahiaddin Yasin’s resignation.

By this morning, a couple of days after the petition was launched, the figure stood at 318,000.

This is probably a record number of signatures for an online petition in Malaysia – or at least involving a politician in Malaysia.

The figure has even surpassed the 254,000 calling for Azmin Ali to resign as senior minister.

It has also easily exceeded the 140,000 calling for Tajudin Rahman to resign as Prasarana chairman in the wake of the light rail train collision in May.

The petition on Ismail Sabri surely cannot have escaped the attention of the powers that be.

In contrast, a recent petition rejecting Anwar Ibrahim as the next PM has drawn just over 2,500 signatures.

And a new petition supporting Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister is gaining momentum with 23,000 signatures so far.
