A recent news report described how Mat Rempit ‘Supermen’ blocked the path of an ambulance responding to an emergency along the North-South Highway.

Could this incident be the final nail in the coffin that can erase this madness of daredevil motorcyclists from our roads?

The pattern is depressingly familiar. Despite knowing full well that police roadblocks may be just around the corner, despite knowing that countless lives have been lost, despite knowing that dangerous riding or driving is a criminal act — these young people who commit dangerous and illegal stunts on our roads continue to terrorise motorists.

If Mat Rempits can gang up and block ambulances on our highways and not get punished for their irresponsible and cavalier attitude, we need to ask a frightening question: what next?

It is clear that governments, past and present, have repeatedly failed to eradicate this menace and social decadence despite repeated statements and warnings issued by politicians and the policing authorities.

What difference is there between other criminals and Mat Rempits that allows the latter to continue to reign and terrorise other road users?

Do we need Parliament to pass specific laws before the Mat Rempit scourge is wiped out?

Or is the Mat Rempit menace not yet a national priority?

As long as our roads are not freed from Mat Rempits, beware the social rot that will spread deeper and permanently plague our nation.

So much has been said and written about the brazen Mat Rempits. Yet nothing changes.

How many more tragedies must we witness before meaningful action is taken?

A nation can make believe by parading and preaching all its successes, but when Mat Rempits continue to reign supreme on our roads, you cannot hide the ugly truth.
