Government must take consumer rights awareness to the next level

Greater consumer rights awareness can help make our environment more ethical, says JD Lovernciear.

In memory of the Consumers Association of Penang and Sahabat Alam Malaysia president, SM Mohamed Idris, who passed on today at the age of 93, the government must institutionalise consumer rights awareness.

Indeed he was a true champion of consumer rights in Malaysia. His decades of steadfast commitment in educating consumers about their rights and duties was no small contribution – which the government cannot ignore.

How can we honour this man for his contributions, sacrifices and determination? The government should build a museum or library in his memory.

To champion his great contributions, include his publications as part of the reading list for all schools. Perhaps even include consumer rights awareness as a subject for undergraduates. This will ensure that future employees and businesses will be mindful of greater public awareness of consumer rights.

Greater consumer rights awareness can help make our environment more ethical. Hence, the least we could do is to get the government to remember this Malaysian champion of consumer rights awareness in a meaningful way – by making sure his legacy lives on in our midst and for our future.

If the government is serious about cleaning up the political and social sphere so that it is free of corruption, then consumer rights awareness is a viable weapon of war to combat corruption.
