Barisan Nasional’s convincing win over its rivals in Saturday’s Johor state election matters a great deal.
BN had been overshadowed for eight years by rival coalitions, both nationally and regionally. Now it has made an impressive comeback in Johor.
This has given rise to speculation that BN’s ‘blue wave’ could continue.
The reality is more divided. Pas controls four states in the peninsula. PH holds effective control of Penang. Sabah and Sarawak continue to follow their own distinct political paths.
The political direction of the remaining states remains uncertain. These are Malacca, Pahang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor – the core of the peninsula.
Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya also seem to have a political character of their own. These federal territories are home to the National Palace, Parliament and the federal government.

What Putrajaya must do
The leadership in Putrajaya needs to design policies that serve the whole nation.
A broader-minded, more inclusive strategy to unite the country is essential.
Petty, provincial politicking must give way to a more open approach.
Beyond revamping and reforming healthcare, education, environmental and transport and mobility policies, Putrajaya must ensure no region feels left out.
Malaysia turns 63 this year. Its leaders in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya must recognise the unique identities that drive different parts of the country.
Malaysia’s prime minister-led system must show patience and the political will to move the entire nation forward.
