Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director general Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak recently said that the rising number of road accidents involving older adult drivers in Malaysia could be reduced if additional conditions are introduced for renewing their driving licences.
Many people in Malaysia are holding back their chuckles if not biting their tongues over this news.
Let us get real.
Should we not tackle the root cause instead of dishing out all kinds of cures?
First, arrest the dangerous speed monsters on our roads.
Second, improve road conditions, ensuring that wear and tear are adequately and effectively redressed.
Third and most importantly, tackle the abuse of mobile phones and watching entertainment while driving.

These days, many bikers – like the food delivery youth – have one hand on the phone and their eyes completely off the road. How about that?
Fourth, eradicate overloading. What is so difficult about stopping companies and lorry drivers from breaking the law?
Fifth, decades have passed and the Mat Rempit (daredevil biker) stunts and street racing continue – at times even in front of police stations. Do something that yields permanent results here first.
Many others have come up with prudent, meaningful suggestions. Qualified individuals have also put forward solutions to tackle deteriorating road behaviour.
We cannot do what needs to be done; yet we see all kinds of piecemeal suggestions like the idea of making it more difficult for older adults to renew their driving or riding licences.
Give us a break, please.

I totally agree with the article. Add another one , thrrow the parents of the underage children who are involved in the motor bike accidents in prison/remand for ONE week . Do it and particular town will have learnt its lessons. Punish the parents FIRST . Go to any major hospitals in the Nation , the maid occupiers of the beds are these irresponsible children
Sixth measure should be to ABOLISH the DISCOUNT CULTURE and PROMPT IMPOSITION OF PRESCRIBED PENALTIES and social service like ASSIGNING THEM TO TRAFFIC CONTROL for some periods. Bless all
