Aliran’s 48th anniversary dinner last Saturday, 22 February, was a resounding success, with the hall packed with friends and supporters of Aliran. It left an imperishable memory.

It was a vigorous night and an exciting event. All present enjoyed themselves tremendously.

The message of justice and solidarity and freedom was the underlining message in the theme “A Malaysia for all”.

One of the highlights of the night was the great speech by Azmi Sharom, who traced the political scenario and the workings of the Election Commission.

It was an enlightening speech that won the warm applause of those present.

The other point that came across was the issue of migrants. Most Malaysians do not view the migrants with sympathy or appreciation. They are seen as wanting a piece of cake from Malaysia. Many Malaysians fail to appreciate their positive contribution to the development of the country.

This perception changed with the poem on migrants read by James Lochhead.

If it was not for the immigrants, we would not have achieved so much progress and development of the country. If not for them, our roads and streets would not be clean, our high-rise buildings would not have come about, and our farm produce would not be feeding us.

It was through their hard labour and sweat that we progressed and developed. This point came across vividly!

The emcee, Andrew Aeria, kept the audience entertained with his jokes and background information of the performers, who were excellent in their performances.

For me, until then confined to bed with little or no contact with the outside world, it was so exhilarating to see so many happy faces that night!

The quest for truth, justice and freedom is a never-ending struggle.

To cherish these values, we must keep fighting the good battle to preserve and protect them.

With so many present as friends of Aliran, it inspires us never to give up this struggle.

I was there that night, inspired that it was not a lonely battle that we are engaged in.

To preserve and protect the values we cherish requires courage and commitment. The presence of so many that night confirmed that we do not lack courage and commitment.

Together, we shall prevail in this struggle.
