1MDB: Unbearable disgrace with each passing day

How long more must we suffer this embarrassment?

EDGEMARKETS.COM

1MDB has been described as a large corruption, bribery and money-laundering scandal.

This scandal, which began in 2009 in Malaysia, expanded globally and was exposed in 2015.

Today, the world knows it as one of the world’s greatest financial scandals. In 2016, the US Department of Justice took pains to describe it as the “largest kleptocracy case to date”.

Thirteen years down this trail of unbelievable, heart-stopping exposes and numerous investigations, we are still unable to save the nation’s dignity and reputation.

Instead, one convicted felon remains as free as a bird, while he continues to parade on red carpets and savours the standing ovations and adulations of “Malu apa, Bossku'” (What’s there to be ashamed of, my Boss?).

Another is officially labelled a fugitive, and no one seems to know his whereabouts in a world where even Osama Bin Laden could be pinned down.

People in Malaysia are exhausted in spirit. Those who truly love this nation are flabbergasted.

The custodians of nationhood either appear indifferent or are increasingly perceived as powerless.

Institutions that should provide checks and balances appear helpless, leaving many wondering about their inability to do something.

How long more must we suffer this disgrace?

How long more must we who believe in our respective religious teachings and uphold our cultural traditions be hammered with the unending shamelessness of the corrupt?

Will we eventually have to swallow the same bitter pill as that of the Altantuya murder, which has seen no closure even after so many years?
