Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly urged for the continuation and extension of current unilateral ceasefires announced by various stakeholders in Myanmar, including the State Administration Council (SAC) and the National Unity Government (NUG).
This call for a humanitarian ceasefire is cognisant of the fact that the existing unilateral ceasefires announced are scheduled to expire today, 30 April 2025.
The existing ceasefire, which is currently limited to earthquake-affected regions in Sagaing and Mandalay, must not only be preserved but needs to be expanded into a nationwide humanitarian ceasefire to ensure safe, uninterrupted and unhindered humanitarian access to all communities in need.
A comprehensive humanitarian ceasefire is essential to facilitate safe, impartial and effective humanitarian operations across the country, as well as ensure the safety and security of humanitarian and medical teams operating on the ground.
The prime minister and Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has been consistent in calling for an extended and expanded humanitarian ceasefire in their engagements with all relevant stakeholders, including the SAC and the NUG, with the aim of securing and sustaining life-saving humanitarian and relief work in Myanmar.
During discussions held in Bangkok earlier this month, the prime minister confirmed that both sides had indicated their readiness to maintain a ceasefire to support humanitarian efforts.
The large presence of search and rescue teams, medical personnel and humanitarian workers from Asean member states and the international community in Myanmar further underscores the urgent need for a secure and stable operating environment. The safety of all humanitarian personnel, and of the communities they serve, cannot be ensured without a clear and sustained cessation of hostilities.

As Asean chair for 2025, Malaysia is working closely with all Asean member states, the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) and international partners to ensure that relief efforts are well-coordinated, needs-based, and guided by humanitarian principles.
The prime minister has also been in close communication with Asean leaders on this important issue. Malaysia remains fully committed to the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance to the affected communities in Myanmar which is in line with one of the key elements of Asean’s five-point consensus.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates Malaysia’s commitment to facilitating Asean’s collective response, and stands ready to convene further engagements in support of a peaceful, inclusive and Myanmar-owned resolution to the crisis. – MoFA
