On this Malaysia Day, Aliran celebrates the bonding together of the peoples of Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah in the Federation for 61 years.
Our nation’s greatest strengths are its diverse peoples and multicultural heritage – which contribute to our vibrant society. The existing inter-ethnic and inter-religious harmony we enjoy is a precious gift that has been handed down to us.
But now this legacy of inclusivity and diversity – our common identity – is being challenged by those intent on tearing society apart. These quarters manipulate and weaponise race and religion for political gain.
The police probe into MP Teresa Kok’s response to a proposal for broader halal certification is the latest in a series of periodic eruptions. If things continue in this disruptive and destructive manner, it will undermine decades of harmony and lead to segregation and ruin.
Managing divisive matters when they arise requires diplomacy and sensitivity from all sides. It also requires sincere effort, maturity and, importantly, democratic space for people to express their points of view. This space for different and opposing views must be protected from new threats to freedom of expression.
Aliran urges politicians who indulge in communal politicking to put an end to divisive politics. They should instead focus on the people’s agenda and look at how to promote harmony and uplift the lives of the poor, the downtrodden and the marginalised. Special focus must be given to rural areas with high poverty rates and inadequate infrastructure, including in Sabah and Sarawak.
It really is time for a fresh narrative that promotes a more inclusive vision for the nation that leaves no one out.

Our diversity and shared values across our varied cultures and religions should be seen as priceless assets that can be harnessed to create a vibrant and harmonious society.
The multiculturalism and goodwill among the diverse communities in Sabah and Sarawak is something the rest of Malaysia should aspire to.
We urgently need visionary and more inclusive leaders to take the nation in this direction.
Aliran urges the people of Malaysia to join hands in solidarity to celebrate the nation’s diversity. We especially call on everyone to never allow the bigots to destroy the harmony we cherish.

I share all the sentiments expressed here. The divisions that some are forcing on this land must be rejected or we will all perish in a violence fuelled by hatred. Together in Malaysia 🌺
