Farewell, Andy

andyAliran mourns the passing of one of our veteran stalwarts, V Malayandy (pic, centre), who was laid to rest today.  Andy, as he was fondly known to his friends, stood with us over the years, including the dark days of Operasi Lalang, rendering tireless yeoman service in the past as Aliran treasurer and auditor.

His sudden passing from heart failure yesterday at the age of 64 came as a shock as he had no history of cardiac problems.

It was Mahatma Gandhi who said that a public interest organisation builds its credibility on how scrupulously it manages its financial affairs, accounting for every 'pie' (cent). In this regard, Andy helped to set the tone for Aliran's financial management with his strong sense of responsibility, accountability and integrity.

In the earlier years, whenever we had an Aliran function, he was the one who would handle the catering arrangements, in his typical behind-the-scenes way.

Towards the latter part of his life, he continued to serve Aliran faithfully, often walking several kilometres to the Aliran office to help with the despatch of Aliran Monthly. His monthly involvement in this onerous job helped us to keep in touch with him.

At our most recent AGM last November, the assembly as a whole paid tribute to this gentle, soft-spoken and patient soul, as well as other past treasurers, for their outstanding service and integrity over the years.

We will miss you, Andy. May God bless your soul.
