Aliran condemns the thuggish behaviour aimed at instigating trouble at peaceful political gatherings in recent days.
Last night, about 30 persons wearing face masks started shouting and throwing bottles and firecrackers to disrupt a political event organised by the Muda party in Muar.
This is the second provocation in recent times following a similar incident last week.
Hooliganism does not belong to the democratic process. Political disagreements should not be allowed to turn to violence. No one should be allowed to create havoc at peaceful events, or innocent people at these events could get hurt.
We call on the authorities to take firm action to prevent such acts of intimidation and to ensure the safety of those attending peaceful political events. Participants should not have to worry about their safety or be daunted.
As it is, the nation is already saddled with problems such as corruption, a sluggish economy and national debt. We do not need hooliganism and mob rule to be added to this list.
The authorities must bring to book the culprits without delay. Swift, effective action is needed to deter anyone who might be tempted to resort to thuggish behaviour or mob rule in the future.
