Aliran welcomes court ruling granting Loh Siew Hong custody of her children

Religion should not be used as grounds to split them up

Loh Siew Hong with her three children

Aliran welcomes the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s ruling that a previous court order granting single mother Loh Siew Hong custody of her three children is still valid.

We hope this verdict will end the nightmarish ordeal suffered by Loh, who was separated from her two twin daughters and son three years ago. It is a reunion that has been delayed for far too long.

The love and bond between a mother and her children must not be severed, least of all, by a third party. Religion should not be used as grounds to split them up.

We hope no party will create obstacles to this family reunion, which has been sanctioned by a court of law. Any attempt to scuttle this reunion would be regarded as contempt of court – a serious offence.

Loh and her children deserve the right to start life anew together. Anything less than this would be a desecration of family values and a violation of their right to collective happiness as a family.

Perhaps this court decision attests to the fact that we can still be a nation that knows how to embrace love regardless of our cultural and ethnic differences.
