“Hudud? What about the flood victims in Kelantan?”

This was the issue highlighted in BFM’s Kupas programme on 19 March 2015, titled Hudud: Isi Periuk Nasi. In it, host Aisyah Tajuddin questioned the priorities of Kelantan state leaders. The video of the show was posted on Youtube almost six months after the big flood in Kelantan.

The number of views and shares of the video skyrocketed immediately after it was posted. The video received a lot of responses and comments from the public via social media, hence the name “Viral, Sial!”

But the public discussion triggered by the video was not about the issue highlighted in the video. The masses talked about the credibility and identity of the host instead. Hate speech, death and rape threats, and arguments about the host’s personal life filled social media and mainstream media.

For our Aliran screening in March, we are collaborating with Pandita Fest, a fest by a young activists collective, to screen Viral, Sial! This free screening is open to all. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Aliran president Dr Prema Devaraj and Hasanah Akhir, a project officer from the Women’s Centre for Change (WCC).
