Film screening: The True Cost

Have you ever thought about who made your clothes and how they were made?

The clothes we have are not merely items of clothing that we buy and wear and that serve as our identity – but they encompass many other aspects.

This documentary tells us about our clothes, the people who make the clothes, and the consequences of fast fashion – the current industry of apparel production. It tells us about the true cost of clothing ie who is paying the price for our clothing.

The impact of fast fashion is delivered through the environmental, social and psychological lens. This is done by focusing on the life of low-wage workers in developing countries facing river and soil pollution, pesticide contamination, disease and death and then drawing a connection to global capitalism supported by advertising (mass media) and consumerism.

The film also shares the garment workers’ journey as they battle to sustain their livelihood.

Experts, for their part, share their insights into fast fashion, some of them calling for more sustainable forms of clothing production.
