Tok Guru, a political icon who epitomised humility

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) is greatly saddened by the passing of Dato’ Haji Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Regardless of our political persuasions, faith, gender and race, it cannot be denied that Malaysia has lost a key and respected leader.

Tok Guru, as how the general populace affectionately called the Mursyidul Am of Pas and former Menteri Besar of Kelantan, was instrumental in popularising Pas among non-Muslims at a critical period when race and religion were being politicised by the ruling government to entrench themselves in office.

He was widely admired for his humility, clean living and simple lifestyle – all rare traits and practices in politicians.

We share the grief of his family as well as his supporters from all faiths and political affiliations, to whom we also offer our deepest condolences.

Though our hearts are heavy, may we find solace in our prayers for Allah to accept his good deeds and rest his soul in peace.

Steering Committee of Bersih 2.0, which comprises:
