RM500,000 raised but many are still hungry

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) and our partner Engage wish to thank all 1,647 people who donated to #MakanKongsi over the past month and helped us collect a total of RM503,376 to date.

With this amount, we have given out 83 small grants totalling RM439,044 to 45 NGOs and individual partners who are on the ground providing food vouchers, financial aid and grocery packs to the neediest of communities during this movement control order period.

So far, a total of 16,775 vulnerable people from all ethnicities, nationalities and creeds have benefited from the assistance provided by us.

With the extension of the movement control order by another two weeks until 12 May, we expect that the situation of many who are not registered in the official system and are not receiving aid would get worse.

Many who have some money and food at the start of the movement control order on 18 March would have run out of their resources by now and facing all means of pressure to stay alive. Apart from the lack of food, many are also under pressure from landlords to pay rents and utility bills.

The battle against the coronavirus must be won, but the humanitarian crisis this movement control order has created must be acknowledged and handled by everyone, from the government, NGOs, the private sector, political parties and indeed every citizen. No one group or sector can manage the magnitude of this crisis and many communities are still at risk of hunger and starvation.

#MakanKongsi will continue to raise fund from the public so that we can continue to support our partners and not abandon the beneficiaries who have been receiving groceries and aid that was to last them for only two weeks.

The solid support we are receiving from our donors is also sending a strong message to our partners and beneficiaries that they are not walking alone but that we are behind them all the way.

You may donate through our payment partner Bold.pay by using your credit card, debit card, online banking (FPX), e-Wallet (Boost, Grabpay, TnG, MCash, QRPay) by clicking on this link.
