On World Refugee Day 2025, observed annually on 20 June, the Malaysian Bar stands in solidarity with refugees in Malaysia and around the world.
This year’s theme “Solidarity with Refugees” is a powerful reminder that our shared humanity calls us to support, protect and stand alongside those forced to flee their homes.
The global refugee crisis continues to grow, with over 100 million people forcibly displaced due to conflict, persecution, violence and human rights violations.
Malaysia hosts a significant number of refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom live in precarious conditions without access to formal legal status, education, healthcare or the right to work.
Despite these challenges, refugee communities in Malaysia have shown remarkable resilience. They contribute to society in meaningful ways, through mutual support networks, community education initiatives, skills sharing and humanitarian outreach. These efforts reflect the spirit of solidarity that this year’s theme upholds – a unity that transcends borders and backgrounds.
However, systemic barriers remain. Refugees in Malaysia continue to lack legal recognition under domestic law, which severely limits their access to justice and protection. This legal invisibility leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, arbitrary arrest and detention.
The Malaysian Bar, therefore, calls for the following:
- Sign up for Aliran's free daily email updates or weekly newsletters or both
- Make a one-off donation to Persatuan Aliran Kesedaran Negara (ALIRAN), CIMB a/c 8004240948
- Make a regular pledge or periodic auto-donation to Aliran
- Become an Aliran member
- Enactment of a clear legal and policy framework that recognises the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in accordance with international standards
- Accession to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol
- Access to legal protection, healthcare, education and lawful employment for all refugees and asylum-seekers
- Promotion of community engagement and partnerships that support integration and uphold the dignity of displaced persons
As officers of the court and advocates for justice, the Malaysian Bar remains committed to upholding the rights of marginalised and vulnerable communities.
We believe that true solidarity with refugees means not only offering compassion but also advocating for meaningful, rights-based solutions.
