We, the members of G25, strongly support public calls for the government to restore the pension of former High Court judge, Dato’ Syed Ahmad Idid Syed Abdullah.
Syed was compelled to resign from the judiciary in 1996 after exposing serious allegations of corruption and misconduct within the judiciary.
Syed’s case is not simply about a pension. It is about justice, accountability and the way a nation treats those who have the courage to speak up when they believe that something is wrong.
As a judge in 1996, Syed had raised concerns about matters which threatened the integrity of the judiciary.
Instead of conducting proper investigations into his allegations, he was made to pay a heavy personal price for bringing those matters to light, including suffering the loss of his pension and other public service entitlements.
Syed’s experience is an important reminder of the personal cost that whistleblowers can bear when they expose wrongdoing.
The failure of the government to properly investigate the allegations, and the decision instead to punish the whistleblower, set a dangerous precedent.

It sent a troubling message that those who speak up against wrongdoing may themselves bear the consequences, while the allegations they raise remain unaddressed. Those involved leave unscathed.
It undermined the integrity of our institutions and weakened public confidence in Malaysia as a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law.
The consequences of this failure are far-reaching. Malaysia has since made international headlines over scandals such as 1MDB and, more recently, Tabung Haji, among other cases of long-standing corruption.
In the 30 years since Syed’s forced retirement, developments in judicial reform have provided significant grounds for taking his disclosures seriously.
The restoration of Syed’s pension by the ‘Madani’ (trustworthy) government now would carry a significance far beyond his individual case. It would demonstrate that the government is finally prepared to confront past injustices and correct them, affirming its commitment to institutional reforms and justice.
It must be emphasised that justice must not only be spoken of as a principle, but must be acted upon.
We, the members of G25, urge the government to examine Syed’s case to find an appropriate and lawful means of restoring his pension with full arrears and other entitlements that were denied to him.
This would send a powerful message to present and future public officers that integrity, honesty and the courage to speak against corruption are values that Malaysia respects and upholds.
If we expect public officers to have the courage to speak up against corruption and abuse of power, they must have confidence that the system will protect, rather than punish them for acting in the public interest.
Syed has himself said recently in the press, “Whistleblowing is not an act of slander, but an act of justice intended to stop corruption and correct dangerous wrongdoing.”
