Rule of law must prevail: Reject calls for Najib’s release or house arrest!

The CSO Platform for Reform strongly condemns the recent push by Umno leaders and their allies in Pas advocating for Najib Razak’s release or a house arrest arrangement.

The rule of law is the foundation of any democratic society, ensuring that no one is above the law, irrespective of status or power.

Najib, convicted by the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Federal Court for corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering, must serve his full sentence. His conviction is not a matter of political persecution but the result of due process, supported by irrefutable evidence.

Granting clemency or a reduced sentence to Najib would set a dangerous precedent, creating a perception that justice in Malaysia is negotiable for the political elite.

By disregarding judicial decisions, these leaders risk perpetuating a culture of impunity which trivialises enforcement and undermines judicial independence.

Any attempts to draw parallels between Najib’s case and the pardon granted to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in 2018 are misleading and baseless. The courts have already affirmed the legality of Anwar’s pardon, which was rooted in political persecution, unlike Najib’s conviction for financial crimes and corruption.

Umno and Pas must abandon these disgraceful attempts to manipulate the rule of law for political gain. The people deserve leaders who uphold justice and integrity, not those who prioritise the interests of the convicted over the wellbeing of the nation.

The CSO Platform for Reform echoes the Attorney General’s Chambers’ reminder that clemency pleas must follow due process as outlined in the Federal Constitution.

Any deviation from established procedures would undermine the sanctity of the Agong’s authority and Malaysia’s justice system.

As we approach a new year, the CSO Platform for Reform calls on everyone to reject any measures that compromise the rule of law and demand accountability from those in positions of power.

When you can pardon or release a convicted political crook, there is no real democracy in the country.
