[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW] Pada 10 Februari, sekumpulan mahasiswa bergelar Students Against Genocide Malaysia (SAGM) dari University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) telah memuat naik infografik ke Instagram yang mendedahkan kerjasama antara School of Computer Science UNM dan BAE Systems, yakni sebuah syarikat pembikin senjata British yang memberi sokongan ketenteraan kepada Angkatan Pertahanan Israel (IDF) dalam bentuk pesawat pejuang.
Pada masa yang sama, pihak SAGM telah menyiarkan sepucuk warkah terbuka bagi menuntut penjelasan dan tindakan lanjut daripada pihak UNM terhadap kerjasama ini. Warkah tersebut telah ditandatangani oleh 24 buah organisasi dan 189 orang individu.
Namun demikian, pihak UNM masih belum memberi apa-apa respons secara rasmi kepada orang awam bagi menjawab warkah tersebut biarpun tarikh akhir yang diberi, iaitu 19hb Februari, telah lepas.
Susulan itu, pihak SAGM telah melancarkan kempen pada peringkat universiti bagi menuntut pihak UNM supaya memenuhi tuntutan yang telah diberikan dalam warkah tersebut. Kronologi perkembangan kempen ini adalah seperti berikut:
- 10 Februari – SAGM mendedahkan hubungan antara UNM dan BAE Systems serta menyiarkan warkah terbuka yang mengandungi tuntutan kepada pihak UNM bersama tarikh akhir 19 Februari
- 19 Februari – SAGM dan semua individu juga organisasi yang menandatangani warkah terbuka tersebut tidak menerima apa-apa respons secara rasmi daripada pihak UNM
- 20 Februari – SAGM mengumumkan suatu perhimpunan yang akan berlaku di luar dewan makan UNM sebagai platform bagi mahasiswa menyuarakan solidariti terhadap perjuangan warga Palestin
- 25 Februari – SAGM menjalani perhimpunan dan menerima kehadiran mengejutkan oleh tiga orang pegawai polis berseragam sebagai suatu bentuk intimidasi
- 26 Februari – SAGM mengumumkan kemunculan polis di Instagram serta hasrat untuk tetap menjalani perhimpunan mingguan pada bulan Ramadan sebagai tanda solidariti terhadap perjuangan Palestin supaya memperlihatkan keteguhan mahasiswa membantah tindakan UNM setakat ini
- 5 Mac – Seorang anggota SAGM dikenalpasti oleh pihak UNM dan dihubungi melalui Whatsapp oleh seorang pegawai Students Association (SA) untuk mengaturkan pertemuan tertutup antaranya dan lembaga pentadbiran universiti pada hari yang sama tetapi SAGM menolak dan menyatakan bahawa SAGM akan memberi kata putus dalam masa yang terdekat
- 6 Mac – SAGM menjalani sesi perhimpunan sempena bulan Ramadan yang pertama dan dihampiri oleh pegawai SA yang memberitahu bahawa pihak SAGM perlu mengisi borang untuk mendapatkan izin secara birokrasi bagi terus menjalani aktiviti-aktiviti yang dirancangkan
Setelah melakukan perbincangan, pihak SAGM sebulat suara berputus untuk menolak pertemuan tertutup bersama pihak UNM. Hal ini kerana tuntutan yang diberi bukan hanya tuntutan pihak SAGM, malah merupakan tuntutan oleh setiap individu dan organisasi yang menandatangani warkah tersebut. Isu ini bukan terbatas pada pihak SAGM dan UNM sahaja tetapi melibatkan kepentingan awam.
Maka dengan itu, pihak UNM wajib memberi respons secara terbuka melalui media komunikasi yang boleh dicapai oleh orang awam. Lagipun, tidak ada apa-apa manfaat jika pertemuan tersebut dilakukan kerana pihak mahasiswa tidak mempunyai apa-apa kuasa untuk menarik UNM keluar daripada kolaborasinya bersama BAE Systems.
Sebaiknya, pihak UNM perlu mencontohi University of York yang telah melupuskan hubungannya dengan BAE Systems pada tahun lepas tanpa apa-apa pertemuan bersama mahasiswa-mahasiswanya yang lantang bersuara.

Memandangkan pihak UNM enggan bertanggungjawab, serta memilih untuk melengah-lengahkan isu ini di samping mengabaikan juga mengintimidasi mahasiswa-mahasiswanya, pihak SAGM telah menghubungi beberapa buah pertubuhan mahasiswa lain bagi menggembleng tenaga demi mengukuhkan tuntutan kami.
Hasilnya, pertubuhan-pertubuhan tersebut telah berputus untuk mendirikan Gabungan Mahasiswa Memperjuangkan Palestin (GMMP) bagi menyatukan usaha dan suara mahasiswa di seluruh negara untuk menjayakan suatu kempen pada peringkat nasional demi membasmi sebarang sokongan berbentuk material terhadap entiti Zionis Israel oleh mana-mana pihak di Malaysia, bermula dengan UNM.
Dengan ini, kami berharap agar setiap mahasiswa menyambut baik usaha ini dan berdiri teguh bersama warga Palestin yang sedang menghadapi kezaliman melampau negara haram Israel.
Akhir kata, kami selaku GMMP mahu mengambil ruang ini untuk menekankan bahawa pihak berkuasa mana-mana universiti yang bekerjasama dengan syarikat yang menyumbang senjata kepada Israel untuk digunakan dalam jenayah perang di Palestin mempunyai liabiliti jenayah selaras dengan peruntukan di bawah Statut Rom, Konvensyen Genosid, dan langkah-langkah sementara yang diputuskan oleh Mahkamah Keadilan Antarabangsa.
Maka dengan itu, kami menyeru sekali lagi kepada pihak UNM supaya menjelaskan hubungannya bersama BAE Systems dan mengambil tindakan yang sewajarnya seperti yang tertera dalam tuntutan-tuntutan awal SAGM dan penandatangan yang lain.

UNM students oppose the university’s collaboration with a weapons manufacturing company alleged to support the Israeli Defense Forces
On 10 February, a group of students under the name of Students Against Genocide Malaysia (SAGM) from University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) uploaded an infographic on Instagram exposing a partnership between UNM’s School of Computer Science and BAE Systems, a British arms manufacturer that provides military support to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the form of fighter jets.
At the same time, the SAGM released an open letter demanding disclosure and further action by UNM regarding this partnership. The letter has received signatures of endorsement from 24 organisations and 189 individuals.
Despite this, UNM has not yet given any official response to answer the letter publicly even though the given deadline of 19 February has passed.
Following this, the SAGM organised a campus-wide campaign demanding that the university fulfil the demands given in the open letter. The chronology of events regarding the campaign’s recent developments are as follows:
- 10 February – The SAGM exposes the partnership between UNM and BAE Systems, along with the release of an open letter that contains the list of demands directed at the UNM. The letter also contains a deadline of 19 February
- 19 February – The open letter, having amassed ample signatures from individuals and organisations, receives no formal response from the UNM
- 20 February – The SAGM announces an on-campus gathering to be held in UNM’s outdoor cafeteria, serving as a platform for students to express solidarity with the Palestinian cause
- 25 February – The SAGM conducts the on-campus gathering at the outdoor cafeteria and receives a shocking visit from three uniformed police officers. The SAGM views it as a form of intimidation
- 26 February – The SAGM publicises the on-campus appearance of uniformed police officers on Instagram. In addition, the SAGM reaffirms its commitment to continue with weekly gatherings during the month of Ramadan in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, showing the students’ stern protest against UNM’s actions
- 5 March – A Students Association (SA) officer approaches a member of SAGM through WhatsApp and proposes a closed meeting with the university’s management on the same evening. The SAGM rejects the proposed short-notice meeting and states that it will make a decision at the earliest convenience
- 6 March – The SAGM conducts the first weekly Ramadan gathering session and is approached by the same SA officer. The SA officer requests that the SAGM undergo bureaucratic procedures and fill up approval forms to continue with the weekly planned gatherings
Upon discussion, the collective members of the SAGM have decided to unanimously reject the proposed closed meeting with UNM. We justify the decision on these grounds – the demands given are not merely in the interest of the SAGM; they are of interest to all individuals and organisations who are signatories of the open letter of demands. This issue is a matter of public concern and is not confined to the SAGM.
As such, UNM is obliged to offer an open and transparent response through publicly accessible means of communication. After all, there would be no benefit if the meeting was to take place as the students hold no authority to remove UNM from its collaboration with BAE Systems.
Ideally, UNM should adopt the same approach as the University of York which divested its partnership with BAE Systems last year without meeting with any protesting students.
Since UNM refuses to take accountability, choosing instead to delay this issue while neglecting and intimidating its students, the SAGM has contacted a few other student organisations to combine our efforts for the sake of consolidating our demands.
As a result, these organisations have decided to establish the Coalition of Students Fighting for Palestine (GMMP) to unite the efforts and voices of students throughout the entire country towards launching a nationwide campaign to end any form of material support for the Israeli Zionist entity by any party within Malaysia, beginning with UNM.
With this, we hope that all students welcome our decision and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, who are facing the brutality of the illegal state of Israel.
In closing, we as GMMP would like to take a moment to emphasise that the administration of any university that collaborates with companies which contribute weapons to Israel used for war crimes in Palestine bear criminal liability according to the provisions under the Rome Statute, the Genocide Convention and the temporary measures decided by the International Court of Justice.
With this, we once again call upon UNM to disclose the nature of their ties with BAE Systems and take the necessary steps in accordance with the demands within the letter by the SAGM and other signatories.
