Geramm condemns alleged threats against THR Raaga

Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) condemns the alleged threats made to the management of private radio station THR Raaga by unidentified parties.

According to Malaysiakini, a police report was lodged by Hindu association Aagama Ani coordinator Arun Doraisamy following the last minute cancellation of an interview scheduled to be aired at 5.30pm yesterday.

The Hot Seat programme was reportedly supposed to discuss the arrests of two Batu Caves Sri Maha Mariamman temple officials by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and other current issues affecting the Indian community.

According to Arun, he was informed by a THR Raaga announcer that the programme was cancelled following alleged threats received by the Astro-affiliated radio station and its chief executive officer.

Geramm hereby stresses that any form of threats against the media is an attack on our right to freedom of the press.

We also note that this not the first incident of intimidation or threat against vernacular Tamil media, in their efforts to highlight issues affecting the Indian community in Malaysia.

We believe that the setting-up of a media council is imperative to protect our right to report on any issue in an ethical manner while at the same time providing a platform for parties to raise their grievances against any report without resorting to threats or violence.

On that note, it is hoped that all #kawangeramm from the various Tamil vernacular media will directly or indirectly contribute to the ongoing discussions on setting-up of a media council.

We also urge all #kawangeramm to remain in solidarity against threats towards the media and with efforts to set up a media council.
