The Protect Karpal Singh Drive action committee (ProtectKarpal) was officially formed on 16 March to oppose the proposed land reclamation project planned along the Jelutong landfill to Karpal Singh Drive coast in Penang Island.

The committee urgently calls on the authorities to extend the period for public feedback on the project.

The committee, representing residents from multiple residential communities in the affected area, has called for an extension of the deadline from 22 March to 30 April for public feedback on environmental impact assessment report.

“The current feedback timeline is inadequate and excludes many affected residents,” ProtectKarpal chair AD Chandrasekaran said.

The initial notification was only posted on the Jabatan Alam Sekitar [Department for the Environment] Facebook page on 12 February, leaving many residents unaware of this critical development, he said.

“The committee strongly urges the authorities to grant this extension to ensure all community members can participate in this important democratic process.”

Urgent appeal to authorities

The Protect Karpal Singh Drive action committee calls upon:

  • the Department for the Environment (DfE) to immediately approve the extension request to 30 April
  • Local elected representatives to support this extension request and stand with the affected communities
  • State government officials to prioritise transparent community engagement in all development projects

Community call to action

The committee also urges all concerned people to:

“This project will have far-reaching consequences for our neighbourhoods, schools and places of worship,” Chandrasekaran added. “A proper consultation period is not just a formality – it’s essential for protecting our community’s future.”
