The general election is drawing ever closer. In our cover story, Francis Loh urges us to cast aside our fears and go for change.

After all, he notes, it is the rakyat who hold our society together and will safeguard Malaysian’s future.

Umno will pay the price for its arrogance and the rampant corruption under the BN administration in the coming GE, predicts P Ramakrishnan. In fact, he adds, Najib must step down for his alleged role in PI Bala’s second SD. Rama also calls for the restoration of local government elections.

Ordinary Malaysians certainly have a crucial role to play in seizing the chance for change at the federal government, says Prema Devaraj, who discusses the impact women voters will have.

Henry Loh reports on an Aliran forum on the GE13 issues which featured Aliran speakers including Toh Kin Woon. In his presentation, Kin Woon says one way to help effect change in the coming GE is for people to participate in civil society movements.

Elsewhere in this issue, Tommy Thomas reminds us of the role of a caretaker government while Azmil Tayeb puts up an emphatic defence of the right to free speech.

Turning to sustainable development issues, Ronald McCoy says Malaysians must call for all political parties to declare they will unequivocally abandon all plans to build a nuclear power plant. The Penang Forum, for its part, is opposing the construction of a road-based tunnel and a highway building spree in Penang. A vision based on sustainable transport is required.
