A prominent Umno lawyer has confirmed that a firm controlled by him, and in which the wife of former Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi is director, was awarded a RM2.2bn contract to build a major expressway, reports Debra Chong of the Malaysian Insider.
With its recent unthinkable and unthinking decision, the Federal Court has been rendered powerless to review its decisions hence forth, laments P Ramakrishnan, adding that this development will perpetuate an injustice for all time to come.
Chief Justice of Malaya Tan Sr Zaki Azmi must do the nation a favour by ordering the Federal Court to review its decision concerning the suspension of BN Menteri Besar Zambry Abdul Kadir and his six executive councillors. This act of the CJ would be perceived by thinking Malaysians as doing national service. It is imperative that he heeds this earnest and urgent call and orders an immediate review.
It was another day of absurdity in the annals of the judiciary when Judicial Commissioner Ridwan Ibrahim incomprehensibly ruled on 11 March 2009 to deny the Speaker of the Perak State Assembly his right of defence. His ridiculous decision has given the judiciary a bad name tarnishing its reputation and ruining its image.
The Chief Justice has forfeited the trust of the people and the confidence of the Malaysian Bar. The only thing for him to do when he no longer commands the trust of the people or the confidence of the Malaysian Bar is to go quietly. That is the best thing to do – the only thing he can do.
It would upset and disappoint Malaysians terribly if the tenure of the current Chief Justice, Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim, were to be extended. It would seriously undermine the confidence of the people in the judiciary to a point of no return.
Any sensible Malaysian must be puzzled and befuddled with Nazri’s response to those who asked why the Chief Justice had to respond to the Lingam videotape uproar through the minister. They must have been horrified to hear Nazri blatantly claiming, “I'm his (the Chief Justice's) minister.”
Aliran calls upon the Bar Council to save the judiciary. It is only the Bar Council that can do this. The Council and its members are well placed to play this role effectively and successfully. No one else can purge and cleanse the judiciary.
