Aliran had two separate meetings today with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng over the Bersih 3.0 simultaneous solidarity assembly in Penang. Gabungan Pilihanraya Bersih dan Adil (Bersih 2.0), terdiri daripada 84 NGO seluruh negara, menganjur satu bantahan duduk di Dataran Merdeka pada hari Sabtu, 28hb April jam 2.00 petang. Aliran is relieved to know that the organisers of the forthcoming Islamic seminar in Johor – ‘Strengthening the faith, the dangers of liberalism and pluralism and the threat of Christianity towards Muslims’ – have dropped the purported ‘Christian threat’ from the title after objections particularly from certain quarters within the Christian community. Aliran is tickled by the Prime Minister’s so-called pledge that he would give more bite to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) if voters hand the Barisan Nasional its coveted two-thirds parliamentary majority in the coming general election. Aliran views with deep concern the threat by the Penang Island City Council to take legal action against Selangor MCA Beliawanis chief Jessie Ooi for having posed queer questions pertaining to the City Council and Penang during the much-hyped Lim-Chua debate recently. The plight of ignorant and uneducated Indians is legendary and deserves sympathy and compassion. From a humanitarian point of view, a caring and compassionate government would have rendered services to relieve them of their misery. But that doesn’t seem to be the case in Malaysia. Aliran is troubled by ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s recent prediction in warning Prime Minister Najib Razak that Israel and the United States were “conspiring to cause a regime change in Malaysia through ‘a puppet government’ to be led by Anwar (Ibrahim)”. Aliran strongly condemns the recent deportation of Saudi journalist Hamza Kashgari as a serious and inexcusable violation of human rights. It is commendable that the federal government is making an effort to provide opportunities for some 20000 people currently renting houses from Kuala Lumpur City Hall to apply for loans that will enable them to get low-cost housing. |
