The legitimately elected but illegally ousted Perak Menteri Besar, Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin, has applied for a full quorum of 11 Federal Court judges to hear his appeal tomorrow.

A majority of Malaysians would support this application not only in the interest of justice but also because they want to see the return of confidence in the judiciary. They want the judiciary to be rescued from the doldrums and regain its former glory as a beacon of justice for all Malaysians.

Law and order have completely broken down in the Perak State Assembly. What we are witnessing today is a farce that has brought down the dignity of the State Assembly.

This may be the first occasion in the entire history of parliamentary democracy when two separate Assemblies have met under one roof simultaneously presided over by two Speakers, with two different agendas tabled and debated.

Twenty-two years ago, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, committed a heinous crime by ordering the detention of 106 concerned Malaysians for his self-preservation. He was under extreme political pressure and his response to this challenge was to be high-handed and undemocratic. He resorted to the use of the infamous ISA to smack down the dissidents, social activists and opposition figures.

Corruption is corruption, Mr Prime Minister. There are no two ways about it. You cannot minimise the crime by camouflaging the offence under some other label. Neither can you make it disappear by simply declaring “that the offence committed by Isa was not an offence under the law”.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s comments when taking the Bar Council to task for their clarification with regard to Rohaizat Othman’s disbarment are totally unfair and uncalled for. The DPM is obviously ignorant of the circumstances leading to Rohaizat’s disbarment and does not understand the process involved in any action taken by the Disciplinary Board.
