As an organisation championing and promoting freedom of expression and of religion, Aliran is deeply disturbed by the reported demolition of three Hindu temples by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) over the last few months. The latest of these demolitions involved the Aum Sri Siva Balakrishnan temple in Setapak.

A forum “Federal Constitution: Protection For All”, jointly organised by Aliran and Article 11 Coalition, was disrupted byan unruly crowd of demonstratorsin Penang this morning. The event, scheduled to run from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm at the Cititel Hotel along Penang Road, was unexpectedly cut short to only an hour’s duration.
Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad’s decision to quit as the Chairman of the Backbenchers' Club (BBC) must be complimented as an act of courage and conviction reminiscent of an earlier act committed by him some 18 years ago.
Aliran is gravely perturbed at the total disregard for the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia. The Barisan Nasional Government has completely ignored an Act of Parliament that had given birth to the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia as “a body corporate having perpetual succession…”

Aliran, Hakam and Suaram have issued a joint statement calling on the IGP to resign if he cannot accept the setting up of the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission.
Aliran is shocked to learn that RELA personnel took the law into their hands and acted like thugs and gangsters in the manner they brutalised some 60 Indian nationals with passports and valid documents on 28 February 2006.

Aliran is alarmed by the sharp increase in petrol prices – 30 sen per litre (an 18 per cent hike) – last night. Since 1 May 2004, over a period of less than two years, the price has soared by 40 per cent. We can now expect inflation to gallop, as the prices of many items ranging from transport to foodstuff to express bus fares will now rise. As usual, these price hikes will hurt the lower-income group, including retirees, and commuters the hardest.
