The election expenses of all candidates and all political parties must be independently audited by certified auditors before submission to the SPR, writes Francis Loh. To enhance democracy in Malaysia, there is an urgent need to enhance the autonomy and independence of the Election Commission, asserts Francis Loh. Though elections have been largely free, there remains a major problem: they have not been conducted fairly or cleanly, writes Francis Loh. In December 2011, Aliran made submissions to the Parliamentary Select Committee on electoral reforms when it visited Penang as part of its nationwide road-show to gather public input. Henry Loh reports on what transpired. Friend and colleagues of the late Khoo Khay Jin pay tribute to this voice of social conscience whose heart was close to the marginalised. Malaysians should begin to examine and question the way in which punishment is meted out, writes Justinian. Taking on Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria, Mustafa K Anuar points out that it is certain actions by Muslim politicians and bureaucrats – their involvement in corruption, for instance – that are actually smearing the image of Islam. He had a deep and complex understanding of the human condition that made him rail at the meanness, injustice, and dishonesty towards the dispossessed, writes Khoo Boo Teik. Francis Loh pays tribute to Aliran’s long-time friend and supporter, the scholar-activist Philip Khoo Khay Jin, who passed away in December 2011. |
