Judicial review of laws is the most important legal weapon in the hands of the Judges to
rectify the mistakes committed by the Executive. This power has been
taken away from the Judges. It should be re-instated, asserts
Mohd Ali.

As we go out to vote, all eyes will be on the Election Commission and how it handles polling day and deters phantom voters. In the original Merdeka Constitution, an
impartial Election Commission (SPR) was put into place. Since then,
various Constitutional amendments have transformed the SPR into a shell
of its original self.

Malaysians want a government that lives up to its
responsibility of ensuring that all citizens and other residents of
Malaysia have equitable access to safe, adequate and quality health
care, said participants at a forum on the proposed national health financing scheme. No one must be denied proper care because of lack of means.

Widespread opposition and unhappiness about the PGCC has been a feature of the election campaign in Penang. At the massive 60,000-strong rally at theHan Chiang school field a couple of nights ago, speakers slammed the project to loud applause from the crowd. So, it is clear that the opposition comes not just from the well-heeled residents neighbouring the Penang Turf Club. The PGCC Campaign Group makes clear its position on the proposal to develop the Turf Club land.

One of the major election issues this time around has been the demand for the restoration of local council elections. Local  councils have become unaccountable, indifferent to people’s
woes, inefficient in their management and intolerable in the way
services are provided. Councillors become arrogant, abuse their powers,
serve themselves, not the public, and are sometimes the source of
corruption. Think about that as you go out to vote.

The government has awarded hefty pay hikes to civil servants, but
private sector workers have been forgotten, say Syed Shahir bin Syed Mohamud and G Rajasekaran. The MTUC is proposing a

As you go out to vote, think of the justice system in Malaysia, urges our special correspondent Pro-justice.The way justice and legal systems function
in Malaysia is a serious cause for concern. The call by a government
minister to journalists and reporters to report “responsibly” (meaning
protect the powers-that-be) rather than the truth sent shivers down the
spines of Malaysians!

Not sure which party to vote for? Let us reflect on a few crucial issues. This time, when the general election comes, many of us might be swayed
by propaganda that things are going to get better if we stick to the
known. But before we make our minds up, let us reflect on a few crucial issues.

Is our current model of economic
development sustainable in the long-run, wonders Anil Netto. What will happen when our oil
wells dry up? What has been the environmental cost? These are issues
that our political parties – both the BN and the Opposition – must
address.

beggars.jpgWe spent a cool RM20 million for a Malaysian to hitch a ride in a Russian space taxi.  Our space hero is busy running a sea-food restaurant.

Despite a lot of hot air about success achieved in eradicating poverty, precious little is done to alleviate the sufferings of the hardcore poor.  Is it because some corrupt scoundrels siphoned off the money, from the fund set up to help the hardcore poor?
